Emily in Paris versus me in Paris

Updated: Dec 22, 2021

When I was 19, I spent a month Paris to fill in as my four-year-old cousin's nanny. I took in the sights and chased him and his friends around with my limited French, and dutifully brought him his gouter (snack) every day at school pick-up. I learned the hard way that a healthy snack is not an appropriate gouter and that he didn't love a very hot bath. I loved watching Netflix's hit show (critics be damned) about a naive, selfie-loving American who goes to France to work at a luxury ad agency. She also had trouble at the patisserie and with the bath. But, our experiences were a little bit different. One thing we definitely both have in common — we fell in love with Paris. I decided to compare our stays the way I know how, with a doodle!

Plus, Lily Collins — Emily herself — liked it. I don't think I'll ever get over that. See below!

Emily knows 0 French, I know "un petit peu."

Emily rides on a motorcycle while I chase a child on a scooter.
Emily has more fun exploring Paris than I did.
